Kevin Durant hopes Oklahoma City Thunder fans 'move on' from rivalry with him after Opening Night.
Blessing the NBA world with content during the annual drought, Kevin Durant continues to go back and forth with social media users on X, formerly known as Twitter. The future Hall-of-Famer has surprisingly shown a humane side of himself by talking to average NBA fans.
One subject Durant has openly discussed is his vexatious relationship with Oklahoma City Thunder fans. There's no secret about the amount of love lost between both parties. What was once mutual love has turned sour since his shocking 2016 departure to the Golden State Warriors.
While time may eventually heal this wound, it won't happen anytime soon. At least not during Durant's playing days. Both sides have antagonized each other over the upcoming 2025-26 Opening Night game as the Thunder host the Houston Rockets.
The NBA schedule-makers knew what they were doing when they penciled that in. Durant would be in attendance for the Thunder as they host a pregame ceremony to drop their championship banner and hand out their rings. Talk about instigation.
Since that announcement, both sides have shared their views. Durant's recent social media rant about Thunder fans and how bitter they've become towards him has only ensured he'll be rained with boos when the NBA on NBC season opener starts.
On early Monday morning, Durant talked with a Thunder fan on social media. The latter was snarky over how he never brought home an NBA championship during his nine seasons in OKC. The 36-year-old then replied by saying it doesn't matter, as both sides have now held onto the Larry O'Brien trophy. He even went as far as to say that he'll bury the hatchet after Opening Night.
"U still bitter bro. Let that hurt go, you are a 2025 champion," Durant wrote. "Don’t be greedy bro. It all worked out for the best. I think most of you Oklahomans will move on after Oct 21st. I can’t wait."
Think it's fair to say we'll believe it when we see it. The animosity between Durant and Thunder fans has only grown in the decade since their divorce. To think that it can suddenly be switched off once the first game is played is a bit misleading. Especially since the Thunder and Rockets are viewed as the top two teams in the West.
While Durant and Thunder fans may never be on strong terms again, there's hope that they can put aside their differences long down the road. Even if his departure and how he's handled it since have rubbed folks the wrong way, there's no denying that any NBA franchise should celebrate a decade of having one of the 10 best players ever.
