The 2024 season marked another strong year for Amarillo-area high school football teams.
Multiple squads made deep playoff runs, with West Plains and Gruver both reaching the state semifinals in December. The Wolves came up just short of reaching the state title, but both teams return a number of starters from last year's squads.
With many talented players coming back around the Texas Panhandle, it should be another strong year. After the Wolves and Greyhounds made deep runs last year, both teams saw multiple players earn spots on this year's Amarillo Globe-News Preseason Super Team.

2025 Amarillo Globe-News Preseason Football Super Team
Superlatives
Most Valuable Player: Reid Macon, Sr., West Plains – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team Offensive Player of the Year. 2024 District 2-4A Division I MVP. Dave Campbell’s Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week. Macon threw for 3,528 yards and 38 touchdowns as a junior, also notching 576 yards and 15 scores on the ground while leading the Wolves to the state semifinals.
Offensive Player of the Year: Briggs Satterfield, Sr., Gruver– 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-2A Division II Co-Offensive MVP. As a junior, Satterfield threw for 2,935 yards and 37 touchdowns to go along with 984 yards and 18 scores on the ground while leading the Greyhounds to the state semifinals.
Defensive Player of the Year:Krush Johnson, Sr., Tascosa – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-5A First Team All-District DT. 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Midseason MVP. Johnson accumulated 106 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, six sacks, nine quarterback pressures, three pass breakups and a forced fumble.
Utility Player of the Year:Darien Lewis, Sr., Palo Duro – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-5A Division II First Team All-District WR. 2024 District 2-5A Division II First Team All-District Safety. Lewis caught 47 passes for 532 yards and five touchdowns as a junior, also accumulating 10 touchdowns on the ground while being one of the Dons' best defensive players.
Coach of the Year:Adam Cummings, West Plains – Cummings led the Wolves to postseason wins against Lampasas and Stephenville en route to the Class 4A Division I state semifinals in 2024. West Plains nearly pulled off a massive upset over eventual state champion Celina, and brings back the majority of the team's starters from last year's roster.
Offense
QB:Jett Lopez, Sr., Amarillo High – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-5A Division I Second Team All-District QB. Lopez set two school records as a junior, throwing for 3,007 yards and 36 touchdowns while adding 10 scores on the ground.
RB: Slade Russell, Jr., West Plains – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-4A Division I First Team All-District RB. As a sophomore, Russell helped lead West Plains to the state semifinals with 1,697 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns along with 327 receiving yards and five scores.
RB: Slayden Dickinson, Sr., Canadian – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team Newcomer of the Year. 2024 District 1-3A Division II Offensive MVP. Dickinson racked up 1,629 yards rushing and 20 touchdowns as a junior to go along with 26 catches for 253 yards and another score.
WR: Carlos Estrada, Jr., Perryton – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-4A Division II First Team All-District WR. Estrada caught 71 passes for 1,028 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore.
WR: Caden Armes, Sr., Panhandle – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honorable mention. 2024 District 1-2A Division I First Team All-District WR. As a junior, Armes notched 33 catches for 722 yards and 11 scores.
WR: Brock Butler, Sr., Gruver– 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honorable mention. As a junior, Butler accumulated 84 tackles, three tackles for loss, a sack, five interceptions, two pick sixes, five pass breakups, a forced fumble, and a blocked kick to go along with 38 catches for 703 yards and six touchdowns.
OL: Keegan Collins, Sr., West Plains – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-4A Division I Second Team All-District OL.
OL: Jaxon Lawler, Jr., Bushland – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honorable mention. 2024 District 2-3A Division I Newcomer of the Year.
OL: Jack Sinclair, Sr., Panhandle – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-2A Division I First Team All-District OL.
OL: Gavan Brookshire, Sr., Panhandle – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-2A Division I First Team All-District OL.
OL: Kooper Walden, Jr., Stratford – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-2A Division II First Team All-District OL.
Utility: Broxton Robinson, Sr. Panhandle – District 1-2A Division I MVP. Robinson tallied 2,090 passing yards and 20 touchdowns as a junior to go along with 1,214 yards rushing and 23 touchdowns. On defense, Robinson accumulated 92 tackles, three tackles for loss and an interception.
Defense
DL: Jackson Graves, Sr. Wheeler – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. District 5-2A Division II First Team All-District DE. As a junior, Graves racked up 107 tackles, 51 tackles for loss, 18 sacks and two forced fumbles.
DL:Riggs Pennington, Sr., Canadian – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honorable mention. Last year, Pennington notched 98 tackles, 22 tackles for loss, six sacks, two forced fumbles and a pass breakup as well as 38 receptions for 652 yards and 10 touchdowns.
DL: Dryden Prichard, Sr., Highland Park – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honorable mention. Prichard notched 58 tackles and seven sacks in 2024.
LB: Keima'j Barnes, Sr., Palo Duro – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-5A Division II First Team All-District LB. Barnes racked up 174 tackles, nine tackles for loss and six sacks as a junior.
LB: Jacob Mora, Sr., Childress – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-3A Division II First Team All-District LB. Mora tallied 126 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and two interceptions for Childress this season.
LB: Mark Haygood, Sr., Canadian – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-3A Division II First Team All-District LB. Haygood racked up 175 tackles, 35 tackles for loss, six sacks, 12 quarterback hurries, two pass breakups and an interception.
LB: Drayven Patton, Sr., Randall – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-4A Division I Co-Defensive MVP.
DB: Kane White-Tinsley, Sr., West Plains – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-4A First Team All-District Safety. 2024 District 2-4A First Team All-District WR. White-Tinsley notched 55 tackles, three tackles for loss, three pass breakups and nine interceptions to go along with 64 catches for 1,065 yards and 12 touchdowns as a junior.
DB: Garrett Ashurst, Sr., Wheeler – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 5-2A Division II First Team All-District DB. As a junior, Ashurst tallied 108 tackles, eight pass breakups, six interceptions and a forced fumble.
DB: Boston Ladd, Sr., West Plains – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 2-4 Division I Utility Player of the Year. Ladd helped the Wolves to the state semifinals with 84 tackles, five tackles for loss, 10 pass breakups and six interceptions.
DB: Zach Bryant, So., Canadian – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-3A Division II First Team All-District Safety. Bryant tallied 91 tackles, seven tackles for loss, a forced fumble, two pass breakups and three interceptions in his first year with the Wildcats.
Utility: Victor Flores, Sr., Gruver – 2024 Amarillo Globe-News Super Team honoree. 2024 District 1-2A Division II Defensive MVP. Flores racked up 127 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, three sacks, two pass breakups and seven forced fumbles.
