The Chicago Cubs are one of the best teams in baseball so far this season. While they have been playing at an impressive level throughout the first half of the 2025 campaign, they could still use an upgrade or two.

One of the biggest needs for the Cubs ahead of the upcoming MLB trade deadline will be finding an upgrade at third base.

Matt Shaw has played well defensively, but his bat has been bad. He needs a bit more time to develop before being ready to handle the every day third base role.

With that in mind, there are a few directions Jed Hoyer could look. However, there is one particular that could boost Chicago's World Series chances in a huge way.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic has named the Cubs as one of the top potential fits for Boston Red Sox star third baseman Alex Bregman before the deadline.

What makes that connection even more interesting is that Chicago pursued Bergman in free agency before he chose to sign with the Red Sox.

Bregman has missed time on the injured list recently. He's nearing a return to the diamond.

He has played in 51 games with Boston so far this year. In those appearances, Bregman has hit 11 home runs to go along with 35 RBI's, while batting .299/.385/.553.

So far this season, the Cubs have had an elite offense. They are led by star names like Kyle Tucker, Seiya Suzuki, and Pete Crow-Armstrong. Adding Bregman to that lineup would give them a very good shot at making a championship run.

Only time will tell if Chicago shows interest in acquiring Bregman from the Red Sox. It's an obvious fit and one that both parties had interest in during free agency.

Expect to hear a lot of rumors surrounding the Cubs in the coming days and weeks leading up to the deadline. Hoyer is expected to be aggressive and it wouldn't get much more aggressive than landing a proven star like Bregman.
