Adding pitching is always a priority for teams around Major League Baseball, whether it be in free agency, trades at the deadline, the offseason, or the MLB draft.
The Boston Red Sox will have multiple opportunities to do so over the next few weeks, with the draft and trade deadline approaching.
When recently predicting who the Red Sox could select in the MLB draft, The Sporting Tribune recently linked them to an intriguing name in the form of Tyler Bremner. Bremner, a right-hander out of UC Santa Barbara, was widely considered one of the top five draft prospects heading into the year.
“It's hard to move past the noise on Fien, but also hard to ignore what Boston did last year in the draft with pitching and aversion to preps. I still think Fien is very much in play, as would be Cunningham or Hall. With Boston running so much of their development through philosophy and overhauling their pitching philosophy, it's not surprising to hear names like Witherspoon, Bremner and Wood come up here.
“A handful of college bats also get mentioned in the likes of Irish, Kilen and Summerhill,” they wrote.
Throughout the season, Bremner was nasty, but there were some questions about his slider.
If he can locate that pitch at the highest level, he should be in a good position to find success at the highest level.
It remains unclear what the Red Sox are exactly looking for in the draft, as some have suggested they could take a college bat.
Ultimately, the front office has to do what it believes is the right thing to do.
