While its signing day is over two years away, South Florida is already expected to produce some of the top prospects in the 2028 recruiting cycle, and we anticipate Miami to be involved with several of these recruitments.

We got the chance to check out top-10 edge rusher Asher Ghioto on Thursday, and on Friday, we watched top-ranked cornerback A’Mir Sears and West Broward fall to Corner Canyon, the number-one team from Utah.

Despite Sears’ squad coming up short, the sophomore defensive back played well. He was mostly utilized as a single-high safety, and he was most often involved in the run game.

Sears, at 6-foot-1 and 160 pounds, has a long but slim frame. This didn’t stop him from being a willing and effective tackler, however. Most impressively, he came up with consecutive goalline stops as Corner Canyon attempted to power into the end zone.

He’ll continue playing safety, as well as elsewhere along West Broward’s secondary. This is all matchup-dependent, Sears tells CaneSport.

“It’s really off what the team that we match up with this weekend, what they’re doing, so if it’s a team that’s run-heavy, most likely I’ll be at the safety to stop the run,” Sears said. “But, other than that, if it’s a pass team, I’ll be at the corner, safety, just being everywhere.”

After his productive freshman season, Sears was named to the MaxPreps Freshman All-American Team. He played on both ends for West Broward, totaling 57 tackles and four interceptions on defense and 25 receptions for 501 yards and 5 touchdowns on offense.

As for his recruitment, Sears is still in the early stages, but he’s taken an early liking to Miami.

Sears wore a UM decal sticker on his helmet on Friday, and he’ll be at the Hurricanes’ season opener on August 31 against Notre Dame.

“[Miami was] my first offer. They just really show me love,” said Sears, who is looking forward to watching how Miami’s defensive backs fare against a talented group of Notre Dame wideouts.

In addition to Miami, the schools that are sticking out to Sears right now are South Florida, Georgia, Nebraska and Indiana.

CaneSport’s Take

What we loved most about Sears’ performance was his drive and competitiveness. The willingness and lack of hesitation he showed while tackling speaks to the way the talented sophomore prospect is wired. We wouldn’t be surprised if he ends up becoming one of the top defensive backs to come out of South Florida in recent years. Miami’s going to make an obvious play for him.
