The Desert Christian Academy football team proved last year was no fluke with an impressive season-opening win at Twentynine Palms
While Desert Christian Academy had its most successful season ever last year, there were some unknowns heading into Friday's opener as they welcomed a new head coach and turned over the reins of the offense to a freshman quarterback in their first-ever game against Twentynine Palms.
The Conquerors went up the hill and had all the right answers to any questions they might have had in a convincing 36-12 victory over the Wildcats. The win proves that Desert Christian Academy may be even more dangerous this year.
The win marked a victorious debut for new coach and former NFL player Chris Johnson. He took over a DCA team that went 9-1 last season and has them continuing to play at a high level.
Freshman quarterback Mario Gallo was strong in his debut, going 12 for 19 for 198 yards and three touchdowns. Two of his scores went to Judah Garrison and the other went to Eusebio Gallo.
The Conquerors have a balanced attack as returning prolific running back Cash Scott picked up right where he left off. He rushed 27 times for 152 yards and one touchdown.
On the defensive side of the ball, freshman Mauro Pazos had a big game with seven tackles and a pick-six.
Twentynine Palms scored the first and last touchdown of the game, but couldn't solve the versatile Conquerors offense.
Next up: Desert Christian Academy (1-0) will stay on the road and play at Riverside Prep on Friday. Twentynine Palms (0-1) is actually off next week and returns to action on Sept. 5 at Lakeside High.
