Wolverines leader has championship-level expectations.
Michigan's Derrick Moore is ready for breakout year originally appeared on The Sporting News
The journey from childhood dreams to college football’s biggest stages is never straightforward.
For Derrick “D-Moore” Moore, that path has been defined by patience and a relentless pursuit of the goals he set long before stepping onto the University of Michigan campus. Now entering his final season in Ann Arbor, Moore reflects on his growth, his motivation, and the standards he has built for himself along the way.
Moore’s story began in Baltimore at St. Francis Academy, where he was one of the most coveted defensive linemen in the country. A four-star recruit, the Gatorade Maryland Player of the Year, and a 2022 Under Armour All-American, Moore initially committed to Oklahoma before Lincoln Riley’s departure opened the door for Michigan. He joined a defensive line already loaded with talent, including Eyabi Okie, Jaylen Harrell, and Taylor Upshaw.

For some players, waiting their turn in such a crowded room can be frustrating. But Moore credits Michigan’s veteran leaders—like Mazi Smith—for helping him understand the value of patience, preparation, and perspective. That mentorship shaped his mindset and positioned him to contribute early in his career.
Moore’s freshman season in 2022 gave fans a glimpse of his potential. Appearing in 14 games, he recorded eight tackles, two sacks, and a pass deflection. By 2023, his impact grew considerably with 34 tackles, five sacks, a forced fumble, and even a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown against Maryland. His progress mirrored Michigan’s rise, as the Wolverines captured the 2023 National Championship.
The following offseason brought change. Head coach Jim Harbaugh departed for the NFL’s Los Angeles Chargers, and several key teammates tested the draft process. While Michigan’s 2024 campaign didn’t end with another national title, Moore’s role solidified. His consistency and production helped anchor a defense that had lost established leaders.

Moore’s performances have not gone unnoticed. He was named First Team All-Big Ten by coaches in 2024, earned Honorable Mention from the media, and has collected three consecutive varsity letters. For Moore, though, the accolades are less important than the example he sets. As he told Sam Webb of the Michigan Insider, the selflessness and rotation of snaps in 2023 helped the Wolverines achieve their ultimate goal. That team-first mentality remains central to his approach.
Now, as Moore enters his senior season, his focus is clear to raise his game and cement a legacy alongside the Michigan greats who came before him. Having already proven his ability to work and deliver when it matters most, Moore embodies the balance that defines championship programs.
For Moore, the final footsteps in maize and blue are about more than individual goals. They are about finishing strong, honoring the journey, and leaving Michigan football better than he found it.
