The Baltimore Orioles announced disappointing Adley Rutschman news before a game against the Boston Red Sox.
The Baltimore Orioles have had a disappointing season in 2025, owning a 58–67 record and on track to miss the postseason after back-to-back appearances from 2023–24.
The Orioles have been decimated by injuries, but none more impactful than Adley Rutschman, the franchise’s first overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft.
Rutschman has appeared in just 85 games for Baltimore this year and has regressed at the plate after earning two consecutive All-Star selections the past two seasons.
The Orioles’ catcher has posted a .227 batting average and .684 OPS—the lowest marks of his four-year career. His power numbers have also dipped, totaling just nine home runs and 26 extra-base hits.
Adley Rutschman Injury Update
Rutschman spent time dealing with an oblique injury in late June and did not return until after the All-Star break.
Ahead of Tuesday’s game against the Boston Red Sox, Rutschman was removed from the lineup due to right abdominal discomfort.
“Adley Rutschman has been scratched with right abdominal discomfort, the Orioles say. Updated lineup for tonight’s game against the Red Sox,” wrote The Baltimore Sun’s Matt Weyrich.

Orioles Must Protect Rutschman’s Health As They Plan for Future
A subsequent update revealed that interim manager Tony Mansolino said Rutschman experienced general soreness on Monday and felt something during his cage routine Tuesday. He will be checked out Wednesday to determine the severity of the injury.
Before the 2025 season, Rutschman had never landed on the injured list—a testament to his durability behind the plate, which made his presence so valuable in Baltimore’s lineup.
The Orioles will monitor Rutschman closely and likely proceed with caution, as he remains a key part of the team’s future success.
