Illinois football power Batavia has informed the IHSA that even if it falls into Class 6A this season it will play up into the 7A playoffs.
Batavia’s not scared.
According to the Kane County Chronicle’s Steve Soucie, the Illinois football power was about to enter the season knowing that its enrollment is right on the cusp between Class 6A and Class 7A for the playoffs.
Batavia has reportedly told the Illinois High School Association to place them in 7A regardless.
For anyone unfamiliar with the Illinois football playoffs, official classes are not determined until after the playoff teams are chosen, right after the end of the regular season. Two hundred fifty-six teams make the playoffs, determined by playoff points. Those teams are then split into 8 classes based primarily on school enrollments.
“We are comfortable in the Class 7A field and we feel like we have good knowledge of the teams we might face there. For now, we feel like that’s where we should be,” Batavia coach Dennis Piron told the Chronicle.
Since 2000, Batavia has played in the 5A playoffs once, the 6A playoffs eight times and the 7A playoffs 12 times.
It won the 6A state championship in 2013 and the 7A state title in 2017.
Last season, Batavia finished second in Class 7A, falling to Chicago Mt. Carmel in the title game 55-34.
