Door open for Watzke to become Dortmund president as Lunow withdraws

Reinhold Lunow will not run for another term as Borussia Dortmund president which opens the door for CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke to seek election for the job. Lunow had initially said he would run for another term in November, which could have led to a heated duel with Watzke.

Reinhold Lunow will not run for another term as Borussia Dortmund president which opens the door for CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke to seek election for the job.

Lunow had initially said he would run for another term in November, which could have led to a heated duel with Watzke.

But Lunow said in a club statement on Friday that Watzke promised in talks between the two that he would continue Lunow's path of the active involvement of members, looking after fan interests, and maintaining the club's values.

"I have received his promise that he will take the above points into consideration if he is elected club president. With this commitment, I feel confident that my concerns will be addressed and can hand over my official duties with a clear conscience," Lunow said.

Watzke had said last week he would withdraw his candidacy if the election committee backed Lunow.

But now the door is open for him to become president, after two decades as CEO. Influential Watzke is also a top official at the German Football League and a vice-president of the German Football Federation.
