The Atlanta Braves are on the verge of missing the playoffs for the first time in years. While the odds are slim, there’s still a chance they could flip the script and rewrite the wrong side of history.

“It’s still a long shot, but suddenly the most stunning comeback we’ve seen in a long time becomes feasible. The Braves have been on the opposite end of this situation before. In 2011, they were eight and a half games ahead of the Cardinals at the start of September, and the Cardinals came back. While not an example fans want to remember, the precedent of a crazy comeback is out there to use as inspiration, even if it was at a team’s own expense almost 15 years ago,” SI’s Harrison Smajovits wrote.

Austin Riley was placed on the injured list after diving to tag out Elly De La Cruz. He was expected to begin ramping up his activity on Tuesday, but things didn’t go as planned.

“He said that Riley had his workouts on Tuesday as planned, but they didn’t go well. Riley was still feeling it while doing running drills. Snitker is also concerned about what could happen when the third baseman needs to make a diving play, which caused his latest injury in the first place,” SI’s Harrison Smajovits wrote.

On Wednesday, Riley flew to Philadelphia to see a specialist. By Thursday, it was announced that he would miss the remainder of the season after undergoing surgery.

“Atlanta Braves third baseman Austin Riley will miss the remainder of the season after having core injury surgery on Thursday. The Braves announced the surgery was performed by Dr. William Meyers in Philadelphia. Riley, who was placed on the 10-day injured list for the second time in two months on Aug. 4 with a strained lower abdominal muscle, is expected to return in time for spring training next year,” ESPN wrote.

This is heartbreaking news for Riley, who never quite found his rhythm this season. Now, he faces a long road back to full health. While it’s a blow for the Braves, the silver lining is that he’s expected to be fully recovered in time for next season. Still, with the year winding down, Atlanta’s injury-plagued campaign continues.
