Jonquel Jones kept New York in it with a hot shooting night, matching her career high with five threes on her way to 25 points. Sabrina Ionescu scored 16 and Natasha Cloud had 14.
With just over two minutes to go, Ionescu sank two free throws to give New York an 85-83 edge. But Atkins answered with a driving bucket, drew a foul off Emma Meesseman’s screen, and converted at the line to put Chicago ahead for good with 1:35 left. From there, the Liberty went cold, missing their final four shots while turning the ball over once as the Sky closed on an 8-0 run.
Chicago scored a season-high 52 points in the paint and shot 50 percent overall. Cardoso was nearly perfect, hitting 8 of 9 shots from the field and all six of her free throws, while also handing out five assists.
The Liberty, who came in leading the league in three-point makes per game, hit 10 of 20 from deep in the first half but just 3 of 17 after the break. They were also without Breanna Stewart, sidelined with a knee injury.
Next up, the Liberty travel to Atlanta to face the Dream on Saturday, while the Sky return home to host the Connecticut Sun.
