Ryan Browne Named Purdue Starting QB

Coach Odom made the announcement after today’s practice.

In an announcement that came after Thursday’s practice, Purdue first year head coach Barry Odom announced that what’s old is new again. Ryan Browne will be the starting QB once again for the Purdue Boilermakers as they now lock into preparations for game one against the Ball State Cardinals.

This doesn’t come as a surprise to me and it shouldn’t come as one to you if you’ve been reading my predictions on this very website. Just 8 days ago I asked the staff who they thought the starting QB would be. You can check out what everyone else thought by clicking that link, but I’ll just include my whole blurb who so you don’t have to waste the time or clicks to try and fact-check me.

I’m not going to pretend to be a QB whisperer or have any advanced knowledge of what to do here, but I have a couple of opinions. First, I want one consistent QB, I don’t want to run out 2+ guys unless there’s injury or garbage time to be had. Two, I’ve seen Ryan Browne play football and I think he’s got the talent to win some games. Plus, he had to have come back to Purdue after spending some time at UNC with Billy Belichick for a reason. Right? So I’m going with Browne until proven otherwise.

Over Browne’s two seasons in a Purdue uniform he’s appears in 9 games and has the following stats:

  • 55/92 completions for a 59.8% rate
  • 1/1 TD to INT ratio with 4 of each
  • 71 rushes for 240 yards

They don’t jump off the page at you or blow you away. I get that. But, Browne has talent. We’ve seen it on the field most notably in the second half of last year’s Illinois game. Bill Belichick also recognized that talent as he signed/accepted the transfer/whatever we are calling it from Ryan Browne just over two weeks after he agreed to become the head coach. Say what you want about Belichick, and I have, but the man can recognize talent. Browne spent a few months with him and decided that wasn’t for him and instead headed home to Purdue University. Unrelated sidenote, I think this UNC hire is going to be a disaster and he will be gone within 4 years. Check this space.

Now, Purdue knows who will be behind center on day one. It’s time to get to work.
