Clemson football had a special visitor on campus on Tuesday. Not a high-profile recruit, actually, but reigning NASCAR Cup Series champion Joey Logano.

Logano was there to greet the team with his trademark burnout in the famous No. 22 car, which left the masses roaring their approval. Nothing new for Logano, but quite the experience for the Clemson football team.

“Oh, it was awesome,” starting quarterback Cade Klubnik said. “I mean honestly I’ve never really been a huge NASCAR guy but that was like top-five coolest things that we’ve ever done in Clemson football. That was like unbelievable.”

When Logano got out of his car, the players began chanting, “Joey! Joey! Joey!” And in the caption of the video released on social media, Clemson wrote, “Always great to have another champion in the building.”

Clemson, of course, will be looking to become a champion yet again this fall. First the goal is to win the ACC. Then it’s to get into the College Football Playoff and chase a national championship.

Logano’s trip to campus was a brief respite for the players amid the grueling nature of fall camp. Klubnik couldn’t say enough about it.

“I was so fired up, especially he burned out tires in the end, there was smoke everywhere,” Klubnik said. “It was really cool. That guy’s a legend in what he does, so it was really cool to get to meet him. Got a picture with him. Got to change one of the tires, too, which was a lot harder than I thought it was going to be. So it was cool.”

What many fans may not realize is that NASCAR actually sources many of its pit crew members from the football ranks. NASCAR even sent scouts to Clemson’s Pro Day earlier this spring.

Former Tigers Landon Walker and Sheridan Jones have both made the transition from football to NASCAR. Could others that witnessed Tuesday’s burnout follow suit?

Time will tell. But in the interim, Clemson players were treated to a one-of-a-kind experience.

“Yeah, definitely fired us up heading into the last fall camp practice,” Klubnik said. “Yeah, it was awesome. It was cool.”
