Army and head coach Jeff Monken named Dewayne Coleman the starting quarterback ahead of the 2025 college football season, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel. Coleman goes into his third year with the program.
Coleman appeared in seven games last year and completed 11-of-16 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown. He also ran 38 times for 136 yards and one touchdown.
As a member of the Class of 2021, Coleman was not ranked, according to the Rivals Industry Ranking. He played his high school football in San Antonio (Texas) at Roosevelt. He also spent time at US Military Academy Prep prior to going to West Point.
Coleman will take over for Bryson Dailey, who had one heck of a season for Army in 2024. Dailey was 54-of-103 for 1,007 yards, nine touchdowns and four interceptions, while running 310 times for 1,659 yards and 32 touchdowns. Coleman will now be in charge of operating the triple-option offense operated by the Black Knights.
“Bryson was a great quarterback and even a better person,” Coleman said back in April, via Sepctrum News. “He’s still around as a coach basically. And he makes sure me and the rest of the guys in the quarterback room are doing the best that we could and improving in the areas that we all see fit.”
Monken was honest about not handing the job to Coleman back in the spring. But, he noticed the work ethic from his emerging signal caller.
“He’s a guy that’s beloved by his teammates, very respected by the guys in this program,” Monken said. “And he’s working hard, and you can see the confidence he has as a leader comes out when he’s in that first huddle.”
Coleman’s mother served in the Air Force, so attending a military institution seemed quite natural. He can now represent Army on the biggest stage in athletics.
“You’re the only quarterback on the field, so you can’t take that lightly,” Coleman said. “You have to take that with a real true passion, and you have to bring a certain type of energy and focus to the group to make sure our huddle works smoothly.”
