Three-time NBA MVP Nikola Jokic reportedly won’t sign an extension with the Denver Nuggets this offseason. But before Nuggets fans start panicking, here is the reason why.
According to The Denver Post’s Nuggets insider Bennett Durando, Jokic will wait until the summer of 2026 to discuss an extension. By doing so, he could earn nearly $80 million more than he would if he signed a three-year, $212 million contract this offseason.
Jokic has two years remaining on his current deal that averages $55.2 million per year, including a $62.8 million player option for the 2027-28 season.
Durando reports the Nuggets presented both contract extension options to Jokic.
“We’re definitely going to offer it,” KSE vice chairman Josh Kroenke told The Post in June. “I’m not sure if he’s going to accept it or not, because we’re also going to explain every financial parameter around him signing now versus signing later. To be completely transparent, that’s the way we always are. And then he makes the best decision for himself and his family, and we’ll support him in it.”
Jokic led the Nuggets to their first-ever NBA championship in 2023, while taking home Finals MVP honors. Since then, though, Denver was bounced in the Western Conference Semifinals in consecutive seasons. This past year was particularly turbulent as they fired head coach Michael Malone just days before the regular season ended.
Despite the turbulent season, Jokic finished second in MVP voting after averaging a triple-double — 29.6 points, 12.7 rebounds, and 10.2 assists per game — while shooting 57.6% from the field and 41.7% from three.
