The Los Angeles Clippers have made the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, but they’ve all ended with a first-round elimination. While the Clippers have won 50 or more games in back-to-back years, they haven’t found a way to step up when the postseason tips off.
Now, they could be looking at adding some more star power to an already talented lineup that features the likes of Kawhi Leonard, James Harden, and Ivica Zubac.
According to a league source who spoke to NBC Sports, the Clippers’ decision to trade Norman Powell could be viewed as a preliminary move that sets them up to sign Bradley Beal once his contract is bought out by the Phoenix Suns.
“Los Angeles trading away Norman Powell — a sharpshooting, ball-handling wing, a role the Clippers need filled next to James Harden — is seen as a precursor to the Beal signing, league sources told NBC Sports.”
The Clippers are in an especially unique position to land the three-time All-Star scoring guard because they’re the only contender that can offer more than the veteran’s minimum. If Beal chooses the Clippers, he could be in line to make up to $5.3 million under the remainder of their mid-level exception.
Keep in mind, Beal will have a lot more money coming in from the Suns after they buy him out of his $53.6 million cap hit for the 2025-26 season.
